July 13th Recap

As you should all recall, you have an assignment due July 27th. The assignment is to make a cheat-sheet for your BDU uniform from the CAPM 39-1. Please use the manual and not the sheet in your binder. However, feel free to talk to me or each other for ideas. If you have any questions, let me know.

Don’t forget that we have a new leadership manual: http://capmembers.com/cadet_programs/library/learn_to_lead.cfm. You will be using the first chapter of the first module. If you have your CAP ID card please go to https://www.capnhq.gov/ and activate your account.

You should all be beginning to understand what we expect from you PT wise. Throughout the week be exercising. If you need help coming up with a workout plan, let me know and I will help you with that.

Next week there will be no meeting! July 27th is our next meeting. We will be in BDUs. Use your cheat-sheet to help you prepare your uniform. Remember what I said about attention to detail. Look for bomb cords and iron your uniform. Also, please bring an aerospace current event to share at that meeting.

We also discussed Leadership chapter 3.

Next week we will go further in depth into chapter 3 and an intro to Leadership chapter 4. Pre-read this chapter if you can.

Charlie flight cadets, please download CAP Pamphlet 151 about customs and courtesies. As I said last Tuesdays, all cadets must be familiar with and perform all customs and courtesies . This booklet will help you to understand the when, how, and why of customs and courtesies.

Charlie Flight Recap for June 22

NOTE: This post is a recap of the classes taught within Charlie Flight for the night of June 22nd. It provides basic information of what was covered as well as listing tasks that Charlie Flight cadets are expected to accomplish prior to the next meeting.

Charlie flight had a class on promotions. To get your first promotion you need to take a Leadership chapter one test, a Cadet Physical Fitness Test (CPFT), a drill test, and a review board. Review boards and drill tests will be done on 4th and 1st Tuesdays. Leadership and aerospace tests are done on 3rd and 4th Tuesdays. Lastly, the CPFT will be held on 2nd Tuesdays before our meeting at Buena Park High School at 5:30 pm.

When you are taking a review board and are told to report in, you will follow this basic out line: “Sir/Ma’am Cadet (grade) (name) reporting as ordered.” You will salute to the the highest ranking person in the room. When you are finished with your review board you will stand up, salute the highest ranking person, when they salute you back you leave.

For first Tuesday of next month, please research an aerospace current event and prepare a presentation on it. Practice saluting and facing movements in front of a mirror. Next Tuesday we will be meeting at Camelot: http://www.golfland.com/anaheim/index.asp

Also, work on memorizing the following information:

Cadet oath: I pledge that I will serve faithfully in the Civil Air Patrol cadet programs, that I will attend meetings regularly, participate actively in unit activities, obey my officers, wear my uniform properly, and advance my education and training rapidly to prepare myself to be of service to my community state and nation

Cadet honor code: On my honor as a Civil Air Patrol cadet of the California Wing, I will not lie, cheat, steel, or commit any act of intentional dishonesty, or tolerate those who do.

June 15, 2010 Meeting minutes

Last week we reviewed basic drill and covered a few new drill movements including: extend/close march halt/moving and count off

Next week be prepared to cover column of files left/right.

After drill C/SMSgt. Shope presented a powerpoint review of Leadership chapters 1 & 2.

Next week be prepared to discuss Leadership chapters 3 & 4 to include special readings.

REMINDER: If you are absent a certain week, use this blog to catch up. Ask your flight staff to review any drill movements you missed or leadership theories you don’t understand.

The meeting began with an introduction of the new flight staff.

An intro to Bravo Flight powerpoint was presented, expectations were set forth, and assignments were given out.

Moral leadership was presented by C/2d Lt. Schuster and C/CMSgt Gamboa.

The flight staff covered basic drill, perfecting those basic movements covered in Charlie Flight.

June 8, 2010 be prepared for PT and Emergency Services. Bring any applicable SQTRs and training material.

Pacific Region Drill Team Competition

This past weekend, Pacific Region held its Drill Team Competition. This year, only two wings, California and Alaska, fielded teams. Because of the substantial cost associated with flying 20+ cadets and senior members from each team to a central location, Pacific Region decided to film the drill routines from each wing so they can be judged remotely. The benefit to all of us is that we get to see the drill teams preform without having been at the competition.

Squadron 56 has five cadets on the California Wing Drill Team. We don’t yet know who has won this competition, but we are hopeful that our cadets, and our team, will get to move on to the National Cadet Competition in June.

One Minute Manager

On Tuesday, January 20, the Alpha Flight Class was on One Minute Manager. The class was taught by C/TSgt Swanson and C/2d Lt Philp. Cadets learned about One Minute Goal Setting, One Minute Praising, and One Minute Reprimands.

The cadets learned how to set effective and reachable goals in one minute. They learned how to praise cadets and followers in one minute while still being able to achieve the goal of a praise, to make someone aware that they are doing a good job and that they are appreciated. The cadets also learned how to reprimand effectively in one minute. They were taught how to get their point across in no uncertain terms while still making the follower feel appreciated and needed.

The Alpha flight cadets can now set goals, praise, and reprimand quickly. They now know how to take just a minute out of their day to let other cadets feel appreciated and to let them know how important they are to the organization.

Introduction to the Cadet Program

Last night, Capt Henninger taught Alpha Flight, along with the two other flight sergeants, about the Cadet Program. This was a more in-depth review of the cadet program than cadets are exposed to while in Bravo and Charlie Flights. The class covered all four phases of the Cadet Program with a focus on the understanding how the classes they teach to their flight fit into the overall picture of the Cadet Program.

The PowerPoint presentation for the class is available for any Alpha Flight cadets that missed the meeting. Alpha Flight cadets are encouraged to download and read the presentation, as they will be expected to know the material that was covered.

Physical Training

December 9 was PT night at the squadron. As promised the cadets got their sports night. We played football and capture the flag. The cadets all had fun and they would like to do it again. Captain Henninger also left the senior side for an hour and participated in the activities. We are all proud of him.
