Last Tuesday, April 20, Bravo flight built a model of the Goddard rocket. Cadets took a piece of 1-3/4″ foam pipe insulation that was 14″ long to form the body of the rocket, foam tray for the fins, a # 64 rubber band for propulsion, a nylon cable tie to secure the rubber band, and a hot glue gun to secure the fins.
The staff members gave each cadet the chance to make their own size of fins for the rocket. After each fin was cut out they were glued on around the fuselage. The rubber band was placed inside the fuselage and then the nylon cable tie was used to hold the rubber band in place, in the front of the fuselage. The cadets would then place the rubber band around their finger, pull the rocket back, then they would release.
C/Amn Justine Crosson says, “It was fun! I would like to keep doing different experiments and maybe some time we could actually make model rockets and test them.”
